Midrand Tourism bares teeth

The Midrand Tourism Network has invited tourism-related product and service providers to join its ranks.

One of the 12 networks of the newly established Midrand Forum, it has hotels, bed and breakfast establishments, lodges, guest houses, transport and shuttle services and restaurants as entities under its umbrella.

Marlene Haig, chairman of the Midrand Tourism Network, said, "The Midrand Forum has opened up many opportunities for tourism in Midrand because one of its primary objectives is to develop and promote the area as southern Africa's premier meeting, business and lifestyle destination.

"After the launch of the forum recently, we had a lot of interest in what's happening here, which is a positive sign, especially when you consider that tourism in general is having a tough time with a lot of establishments closing their doors."

Haig said the first phase of the network's tourism strategy was to align the local tourism industry, repackage its services and products and also market it to businesses in Midrand, Johannesburg and Pretoria.

The Midrand Tourism Network is set to host the first of an ongoing series of product tours throughout Midrand in January. The media, product specialists from Johannesburg, Gauteng and South Africa's tourism sectors as well as tour operators will scout Midrand to get a first-hand view of what it has to offer.
